Center Description: The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States of America in Port-of-Spain has established an Information Resource Center (IRC) to provide information on aspects of the United States such as social sciences, economy/trade, foreign policy, drug abuse, communications, technology, environment, U.S. policy, and American society. The IRC contains: 400 volumes of books including dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias, and almanacs; a collection of 30 periodicals from newsweeklies to scholarly journals; electronic journals covering global, democratic, U.S. foreign policy, U.S. society, and economic matters; 6 online databases; and an electronic Library Reference Guide. Additionally, a significant portion of IRC's services are dedicated to informing students about U.S. academic programs. The EducationUSA Adviser is available to assist students pursuing educational opportunities in the U.S. The IRC holds a collection of materials on U.S. academic programs, scholarships, admission tests (SAT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL iBT), entrance requirements and student visas.

Presentation on the Latest Trends in U.S. Higher Education A representative from a U.S. university made a presentation to 63 high-school guidance counselors on the latest trends in U.S. higher education, supported by the Information Resource Center. The Center's educational adviser used the opportunity to promote the Center's services. College Fair 2010 On October 30-31, 2010, representatives from 67 colleges and universities from the U.S., Canada, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the CXC in Barbados, the Organization of American States, the Australian High Commission and two local banks met with hordes of local students at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre in Port of Spain. College Fair 2010 saw more than 4,000 students informed, advised and on their way to tertiary education, breaking previous fair records. Fans of the U.S. Embassy Trinidad Facebook page soared over 12% in just one weekend to 3,320, as youths looked at photos and information on the site. In addition, several Embassy consular officers worked at the Fair to conduct presentations and outreach to packed crowds totaling 500-700 people, and took individual questions. Related seminars on the U.S. college application process attracted nearly 300 attendees in sideshow events.
