Program Highlights
Meet the Experts!
The Meet the Experts workshop connected Austrian students interested in studying in the US andAustrian students and professors preparing to go to the US with American students at the BA, MA and PhD levels as well as American professors at a variety of institutions. The workshop covered admissions, campus life, studying particular disciplines in the US, and allowed Austrian students to discuss their interests and concerns about US study with peers and mentors in an informal setting. The Meet the Experts session was conducted as part of predeparture orientations and the Fulbright Altenmarkt Seminar in American Studies on April 6, 2013.
Study Opportunities in the US: from High School to PhD

PhD Workshop
The AAEC held its first PhD workshop on May 6, 2011. The workshop consisted of two sessions: 1) an overview on PhDs in the U.S. and how best to apply for them - including information on financial assistance; and 2) a Meet the Experts panel with a U.S. professor, a U.S. PhD student and an Austrian who studied for his PhD in the U.S.
This was a very significant event as many Austrian/European students are not aware of the differences between U.S. PhDs and European doctorates. They also do not know how to search for their perfect academic fit and how to finance their studies.
Some of the topics discussed were:
- How to find the right PhD program – tips and strategies
- Prestige vs. content
- Location – will there be time for social life?
- Funding and Financing
- Academic life in the U.S. – from Honor Code to Writing Centers
- Student workload
- Student – Professor Relationship in the U.S.
- Keys to success and What not to do
The event was very successful. It was attended by 30 participants. In an online survey sent out after the event, 76% of the participants rated the workshop as being very informative and listed the information on the differences of the Austrian and US educational systems, and the the fact that it is crucial to find the "perfect match" when applying for a PhD program as the most important information they had received.
