Center Description: The EducationUSA Advising Center is located in the IRC at the Public Affairs Section, seperate from U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe. We also do advising in collaboration with American Corner in Mzuzu, Blantyre, Zomba, the 3 major regions in Malawi. Our center is open five days a week and we take both walk-ins and by appointments. We also have a very vibrant United States Achievers Program that helps talented undergraduate but undeprivileged students to gain access to higher education in the U.S.

Program Highlights

USAP program

EducationUSA Malawi has a vibrant USAP program. USAP assists highly-talented, economically-disadvantaged high school students to negotiate and finance the the admission and financial aid process and thus to access higher education opportunities in the US. USAP started in Malawi in 2006.


College Fair

Every other year, we try host a local education fair at a large hotel in Malawi, usually in the Capital City, Lilongwe. The last one was in held January 2012.

1 Mastercard Foundation Global Scholars with Malawian Mastercard Scholarship Recipients

Other Information: Mastercard Global Scholars from Malawi will be discussing firsthand their experiences thus far under the Mastercard Program and how to incorporate the Mastercard opportunity in the college application process
 
2 SAT Prep

Other Information: How to write the Essay portion of the SAT. Go through sample essays and scoring of the essay and look at tips and strategies to maximize number of points on SAT essay.
 
3 Pre-Departure Orientation
Date: Thursday, July 3rd, 2014
Time: 09:00 - 15:00
Location: Public Affairs Auditorium
Intended Audience: Students
Other Information: Students that have been accepted to study at an American university and looking at finalizing their final preparation will have the opportunity to learn about travel preparations, maintaining student visa & immigration status, work permit, academic life, cultural shock & practical info on everyday living once they arrive in the United States. They'll also have the opportunity to meet and and learn from fellow Malawians going to study in the U.S. as well as those who have recently returned.
 
4 SAT Prep

Other Information: 25 minute SAT writing section taken under test conditions followed by peer review and overview of the SAT Writing Section.

Brief description of the award, application process:
Opportunity funds, available through EducationUSA advising centers in many countries, support exceptionally well-qualified students of limited financial means with the up-front costs of applying to undergraduate or graduate degree programs at accredited U.S. colleges and universities. Opportunity funds may be used to pay the costs of test preparation and fees, visa and application fees, transportation costs, books, and settling-in allowances.

Brief description of the award, application process:
The U.S. Student Achievers Program (USAP) helps youth negotiate the intricate admission and financial aid processes at highly selective institutions in the United States, while also creating strong cohorts that offer mutual support throughout and beyond the admission process. USAP students represent some of the best and brightest students in their nations. USAP participants embody the following four qualities: academic excellence, demonstrated leadership potential, an ethos of giving back to community, and economic disadvantage.

Brief description of the award, application process:
EducationUSA Competitive College Clubs (CCC) help the best and brightest students apply to competitive U.S. colleges and universities. CCC advisers work intensively to prepare students for the application process. CCC advisers organize student activities including study groups, intensive SAT and ACT preparation, reading assignments, lectures, and community service projects. Students sign a contract detailing their responsibilities, which include attending all meetings during the school year and summer sessions.
