Issyk Kul EAC "Steps to Success" did outreach in rural places of Issyk Kul Oblast.
by EducationUSA Issyk Kul, Oct- Nov. 2011

Issyk Kul Educational Advising Center “Steps to Success” did outreach activities from 14th till 22nd of October for the schools in rural places in Issyk Kul oblast. For this outreach activity was invited the head of Education Department of Oblast Education Administration Ainura Osmonbaeva, inspector of Education Department, Mira Bektenova, and Deputy Director of Oblast Institute Education Gulnur Jumabaeva. With the help of Oblast Education representatives it was easy to organize meetings with students. Every school welcomed us with open arms. All schools were given information about EducationUSA, and about possibilities in applying to US Universities. Of course these outreach activities encouraged students interest in learning English language. At each outreach activity I gave question to students “Do you want to study in USA?”. For this question 90% of students raised their hands. I explained the importance of learning writing essays about themselves in English. For these outreach activities, about 1500 students and 35-40 English teachers, directors, deputy directors were involved. I would like to mention the fact that knowledge of English is low in most schools. Most schools have a problem with the lack of English text books or even some schools haven’t books at all. I suggested to teachers and students to collect money and to buy English books themselves. But teachers do not know which kind of book to buy because there are no English books suggested from ministry of Education. Unfortunately, at schools I saw old books from the Soviet period. For example Tursunaliev’s book which was written in the 1980’s. Some teachers said that it is too difficult to collect money because parents refuse to buy books for 300-500 soms. English teachers asked me to help them to find the way to write projects for English books. Also I told about Association of “Forum” English teachers.
