The East and Southern Africa Regions represent 20 countries. The East countries include: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda - members of the East African Community (EAC) plus Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia - collectively know as the Horn of Africa and Somalia. Countries in the Southern Region include Angola*, Botswana*, Comoros, Lesotho*, Madagascar, Malawi*, Mauritius*, Mozambique*, Namibia*, Reunion, South Africa*, Swaziland*, Zambia*, and Zimbabwe* (*members of SADC). The most recent Open Doors 2009/10 Global Report of Students Studying in the United States indicates students from these two Regions represent 47 percent of the students from Africa. Both Regions are showing modest decreases in students numbers versus the previous year. Southern Africa: 5,313(2009/10) versus 5,613(2008/09) students. East Africa: 9,872(2009/10) versus 10,411(2008/09) students. Total from both Regions: 15,185(2009/10) versus 16,024(2008/09) students.
